Laser Skin Rejuvenation

Laser skin rejuvenation is a non-invasive medical procedure which targets the declining amount of skin collagen, brown spots, red spots, small vessels and spider veins on the skin. It is an ideal treatment for facial rejuvenation where the skin is thick and resilient, but it can also be used for both the neck and the front chest areas that are typically the most damaged by sun exposure. This is a quick lunch break type treatment so patients can return to work when it is finished. Five treatments 2 to 4 weeks are usually sufficient to stimulate collagen formation and final results take about 6 to 12 months to become visible.

What Happens During Aging

As we get older our skin increasingly loses elasticity as it lacks proteins which help keep it cushioned, soft and smooth. We begin to develop skin lines and wrinkles, and our skin may start to look tired and eventually start sagging. Other problems associated with aging include skin blemishes or 'age spots' and 'liver spots', as well as thinning of the lips which can lose their former fullness and sensuality. Another common sign of aging is finding unwanted hair that start to grow in all the wrong places. Major forces responsible for facial aging include sun damage, smoking, gravity, soft-tissue aging, changes in facial muscular activity and skeletal remodeling.

Characteristic Signs of Facial Aging Include

Loss of Tone

Skin loses its tone due to reduced amount of collagen and elastin, and due to decreased muscular tension. Reduced firmness and elasticity cause the skin to sag and look less taut, with deepened wrinkles and rougher surface.

Thinner Skin

The epidermis naturally thins with aging, developing fine lines, multi-colored spots and coarse texture. Loss of fat in the face further contributes to the aged look and skin dryness becomes more noticeable. Less sebum is secreted from sebaceous glands causing a dry and dull looking skin.

Uneven Coloration / Hyperpigmentation

Facial skin is exposed to the elements and as aging progresses people develop red spots, brown spots, fine lines, thinning of the skin (atrophy), bening skin lesions and malignant skin cancers. Other than the cancers all of the above problems can be solved or improved with our laser treatments.

How Skin Rejuvenation Works

Skin rejuvenation care lasers deliver precise amounts of energy to target and destroy vascular and pigmented lesions associated with spider veins, reticular veins, rosacea, telangiectasias, hemangiomas, sun damage, age spots, dyschromia, melasma, poikiloderma, and angiomas from hands, legs, chest, arms and face.

Using the principle of selective photothermolysis, these treatments target different chromophores in the skin, which selectively absorb the laser or light energy as heat and yield the desired response. These optimal wavelengths of light clear vascular and pigmented lesions by targeting the chromophores of hemoglobin (for vascular lesions) and melanin (for pigmented lesions). These damaged lesions are then cleared by the body, removing the appearance of the lesion from the skin. Pigmented lesions undergo a mild desquamation and slough off within two or three days, while the vascular lesions blanch and then resolve within 10 to 14 days.
